CULTURAL OUTING AND CALÇOTADA
Since the late 19th century, the villagers of Montferri and the surrounding villages have maintained the tradition of going on a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Montserrat after the grape harvest, around mid-October, with the aim of giving thanks to the Virgin of Montserrat for the year's harvest. This walk had a strong religious and community component, and strengthened the bonds between the inhabitants of the territory. With the desire to bring devotion to the Virgin Mary closer to the village itself, the Jesuit Daniel Vives, born in Montferri, conceived the idea of building a sanctuary on one of the hills in the municipality, which was part of his family's land. The project aimed to become a place of worship and meeting for the community, thus avoiding the long journey to Montserrat. Daniel Vives was a relative of the architect Josep Maria Jujol, a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí, whom he commissioned to design the sanctuary. Jujol created a unique work, of great artistic and symbolic value. On November 15, 1925, the first stone of the Sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Montferri was laid. The entire town collaborated selflessly in its construction, which makes the sanctuary a true symbol of the collective effort and identity of Montferri.
