III/III: The theatre of Benet i Jornet
By Clàudia Serra, playwright, critic and member of the editorial committee of Asuntos Narrativa
Clàudia Serra is a playwright, critic and member of the editorial committee of Asuntos Narrativa. She studied Catalan Philology at the Universitat de València and has completed the Master's Degree in Theatre Studies at the Institut del Teatre, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. In this lecture we will analyse some of the most important aspects of the dramatic work of Josep Maria Benet i Jornet (1940-2020), one of the most outstanding playwrights of the Catalan stage of all times and an unquestionable point of reference for current European dramatic literature.
European dramatic literature. His output spans five decades (from 1963 to 2015) and more than fifty plays. Today, Benet i Jornet's work continues to arouse special interest. However, a complete objective study that covers the different aspects of his creation (context, influences, relationship with the audiovisual world...) has yet to appear. Some of his texts and documents, moreover, have been relegated to oblivion. For this reason, we believe that an academic study is necessary that takes into account all the aspects mentioned above and that can provide new approaches and materials on the author and his contribution to Catalan literature.
