Josep Maria de Dios Marcer is a tenured lecturer in Private International Law at the UAB and former director of the Institute of European Studies (IEE-UAB). He has been President of the Global Legal Education Association Consortium (GLEAC) since 2018 and a member of the Board of Directors of the European Law Faculties Association (ELFA) since 2012, serving as its President between 2017 and 2018. He also acts as an international arbitrator at the Shanghai International Arbitration Center. Antoni Abat i Ninet is the current director of the Institute of European Studies (IEE-UAB), a Distinguished Researcher and "Talent Banco de Santander" Fellow. He coordinates the Horizon Europe project "Express 2: Specify and Protect the EU Social Contract" and has been a Maria Zambrano researcher at the UAB, as well as a Faculty Affiliate at the Edwin Jaeckle Centre of Law, Democracy and Governance (SUNY Buffalo).

AmicsUAB is reviving its gathering and discussion spaces with a new format that combines knowledge, debate, and networking in a friendly and relaxed setting.

This time we'll be joined by Josep Maria de Dios, former director of the Institut d'Estudis Europeus, and Antoni Abat, current director of the same institute, who will give the talk "Save Europe."

We'll discuss the major challenges facing Europe today from defense and security to immigration, housing, the ecological transition, and inequality and what the Union is doing to address them. We'll also focus on something that often gets lost in institutional debate: how European decisions directly shape citizens' everyday lives, and how Europe safeguards our rights and freedoms. Finally, we'll make the case that Europe's future depends not only on its institutions, but above all on the active involvement of its citizens.
