On October 15th and 16th, AmicsUAB held two very enlightening visits that highlighted the importance of sustainable resource management in our society.
On Tuesday, October 15th in the afternoon, the group visited the Ecopark of Sant Adrià del Besòs, a key facility for waste management in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
During the visit, participants were impressed by the scale of waste processed daily, a reality that often goes unnoticed by most citizens. The visit highlighted the urgent need to reduce the amount of waste our society generates.
However, the work carried out at the ecopark was also highly appreciated, where there is intensive work to separate, treat, and recover materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, contributing to environmental sustainability.
The following day, Wednesday, October 16th in the morning, AmicsUAB had the opportunity to visit Mercabarna, where they were welcomed by Mrs. Ingrid Buera, Director of Marketing and Institutional Relations. Buera gave an interesting talk about the history and functioning of Mercabarna, highlighting why this wholesale market is a global reference in the distribution of fresh products.
Attendees had the chance to tour the fruit and vegetable market, seeing firsthand its infrastructure vital for food supply.
Furthermore, the visit was completed with a tour of the Foodback facilities, a center dedicated to food reuse, where fresh products are given a second life to prevent waste and help those in need.
These visits served to raise awareness of the challenges and solutions being implemented in critical areas such as waste management and food distribution.
