Art, Economy and Power: How Capitalism Has Shaped the Artistic Ecosystem

On May 19, the Fundació Museu Vallhonrat hosted the conference “Art, Economy and Power: How Capitalism Has Shaped the Artistic Ecosystem”, led by Carme Casablancas Segura, in a session that brought together attendees interested in the relationship between culture, economics, and contemporary society.

Holding a PhD in Business Creation and Management and serving as a senior lecturer in the Department of Business at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Casablancas offered a historical and critical perspective on the development of the artistic ecosystem throughout the centuries. The conference explored the transformations in the ways art is produced, circulated, and legitimized, as well as the role that economic and power structures have played in this process.

The speaker emphasized how capitalism has not only shaped the art world externally, but has also permeated its internal dynamics, creating a complex system that influences how we understand artistic value and the social function of culture today.

The event created a space for reflection and discussion among attendees, who were able to further explore the connections between art, markets, and society from an interdisciplinary perspective.
