Conference by lawyer Paula Narbona on the lack of a feminist perspective in healthcare

On Tuesday, March 11, the Mestre Martí Tauler Library in Rubí hosted the conference "Is a Feminist Perspective Missing in Healthcare?", organized by Nexe AmicsUAB. The event, led by lawyer Paula Narbona Vallespín, highlighted gender inequalities in medicine and the need for a feminist perspective in healthcare.

The discussion emphasized how medical research has historically focused on men, leading to misdiagnoses and less effective treatments for women. Diseases such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome have been minimized for years, and symptoms of heart conditions in women are often mistaken for anxiety, delaying proper diagnosis. Additionally, most clinical studies are conducted on male animals, increasing the risk of side effects in women.

The conference also addressed workplace inequalities within the healthcare sector, where women, who make up 80% of the workforce, earn 21% less than men in Catalonia and face more difficulties in accessing leadership positions and research funding. Furthermore, the importance of considering gender-based violence as a public health issue was emphasized, as the healthcare system plays a crucial role in its detection and support.

Nexe AmicsUAB’s initiative sparked a thought-provoking debate among attendees, who reflected on the need for a fairer and more equitable healthcare system for women.
