Conference on Water Poverty and Adaptation Strategies in Municipalities of Barcelona

On May 13th, the Mestre Martí Tauler Library in Rubí hosted the conference “Water Poverty – Lived Experiences and Adaptation Strategies in Municipalities of Barcelona”, organized by AmicsUAB and the University Extension Program of Rubí.

The session featured David Saurí, professor in the Department of Geography at UAB, and Gustavo Romero, a PhD student from the same department. Jordi Nadal was also scheduled to participate but was unable to attend due to personal reasons.

The conference provided a detailed analysis of the difficulties in accessing water in vulnerable contexts, based on interviews with families from various municipalities. Speakers presented key domestic saving strategies—such as short showers or water reuse—and addressed the widespread frustration over the minimal impact of these efforts on household bills.

It was also highlighted that more than 70% of interviewees consume bottled water, often due to distrust in tap water quality. The speakers emphasized the need to recognize water as a public good, and warned of the emotional impact caused by this precariousness, particularly in households led by women with family responsibilities.

The event concluded with a call to review public supply policies, aiming to ensure a fairer and more equitable distribution of such an essential resource as water.

Don’t miss the upcoming conferences by AmicsUAB and the University Extension Program of Rubí, where we’ll continue to focus on pressing social issues that affect us all.
