Dolors Udina: The Translator Who Has Brought Essential Voices of World Literature into Catalan

AmicsUAB is honouring her for her career as a translator and her contribution to making contemporary literature and thought available in Catalan.

Dolors Udina has translated more than two hundred titles, most of them from English. Thanks to her work, Catalan readers can enjoy writers such as Virginia Woolf, Jeanette Winterson, J. M. Coetzee, Alice Munro and Ali Smith in their own language.

Among her most notable translations are Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway, which won her the Serra d’Or Critics’ Award in 2014, and Aldous Huxley’s The Devils of Loudun, winner of the City of Barcelona Award in 2017. She also translates from French, as with Mireille Gansel’s Translation as Transhumance.

Alongside her translation work, she taught at the UAB’s Faculty of Translation and Interpreting from 1998 to 2018. Her career has been recognised with the Creu de Sant Jordi (2018), one of Catalonia’s highest civic honours, and Spain’s National Award for a Translator’s Lifetime Achievement (2019).

The AmicsUAB Board of Directors sees in her work a rigorous, sensitive and committed contribution to language, culture and the sharing of knowledge – values the association shares in its mission to bridge the gap between the university and society.

For all these reasons, we are delighted to welcome her this year as one of our Amics dels Amics.
