Labor Reform and Pensions

On June 11th at 6:00 PM, the last Universitat Opina conference of the current academic year took place at the Mestre Martí Tauler Library, focusing on the Pension System, led by Martín Marcos, a lawyer specializing in labor law.

After providing a retrospective on the history and background of the pension system established in the 20th century, Marcos gave a brief explanation of how pensions are calculated, reflecting on how factors such as the increase in life expectancy or the decline in birth rates undermine a system of fixed and indefinite pensions, which becomes very unsustainable and deficit-prone. For this reason, several measures were taken at the beginning of the 21st century, such as changes in the calculation of the regulatory base and the delay in the retirement age.

The speaker also reviewed other types of pensions, such as widowhood or disability pensions, and the compatibility between them.

In conclusion, Martín Marcos explained how he believed the Spanish pension system should evolve towards a mixed system, incorporating characteristics used in other European Union countries, and also discussed private savings as an alternative to pensions.

To conclude, a Q&A session was held where the conference attendees were able to make their contributions and inquiries.
