Philosopher Pere Lluís Font, a leading figure in contemporary Catalan philosophy, passes away

Pere Lluís Font has passed away at the age of 91. He was a Philosophy professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a key figure in contemporary Catalan philosophy. He was associated with the university from 1968 until his retirement in 2004, playing a fundamental role in consolidating philosophy studies, and also served as the department’s first coordinator and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

He stood out as a teacher and mentor for several generations, thanks to his combination of rigor, clarity, and intellectual generosity, viewing philosophy as a tool for critical thinking and freedom. His work was crucial in promoting philosophy in Catalan, particularly through the translation, editing, and study of major European thinkers such as Descartes, Montaigne, Spinoza, Kant, and Pascal.

Committed to Catalan culture and to a demanding vision of the university as a space of public service, he received numerous distinctions, including the Creu de Sant Jordi, an honorary doctorate from the University of Lleida, and the Honorary Prize of Catalan Letters.

His passing represents the loss of a major intellectual and academic figure, as well as a way of understanding philosophy and the university grounded in rigor, commitment, and responsibility.
