World Climate and Climate Change Adaptation Day 2022

Today, March 26, like every year, we commemorate World Climate Day and the importance of taking care of the environment.

Global warming is already a reality. The significant increase in the planet's average temperature, caused by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, is closely linked to human activity. One of the latest reports from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) warns of global warming exceeding 1.5°C, which could lead to unprecedented climate disruptions.

On Wednesday, March 2, the Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5) was held in Nairobi (Kenya). During this session, it was decided to approve the creation of an International Negotiating Committee to achieve a binding international agreement with the aim of curbing plastic pollution. As explained by Hugo Morán, Secretary of State for the Environment, the proposal goes beyond addressing only marine waste. The aim is to solve the problem from a global perspective, considering land-based sources and addressing the full life cycle of plastic.

According to the 2021 Report published by Pollution Barcelona, the year ended by massively surpassing the new thresholds for PM10 particulate matter. It was shown that the values increased by 141% to 158% compared to the previous year. They themselves state, “The average annual pollution levels of NO2, PM10, and PM2.5 at all measurement stations remain below the legal maximum thresholds for the second consecutive year, but they are clearly above the levels considered safe by the World Health Organization.”
